Launched February 10th, 1868. Is a Screw Steam Ship of 1200 horse power, and carries 14 guns, and plated with 9-inch iron in the centre, reduced at ends. She carries in a central battery 8 400-pounder 18-ton guns, and at the bow and stern 2 12-ton guns (in detached batteries), and 4 6.5 -ton guns. Length 325 ft 0 ins. Breadth 59 ft 0 ins Depth of Hold 21ft 1 in. Draught of Water forward 22 ft 11 ins Draught of Water aft 26 ft 6 ins. Tonnage 5234. Engines by Messrs. J. Penn & Son. Her speed is 14.69 knots an hour, and she carries a complement of 630 men, and cost £401,000. She was first commissioned on the 2nd of November, 1868, by Captain The Lord Gilford; Lord Walter Kerr being Commander, and Lieutenant C. C. P. Fitzgerald, First Lieutenant. She has since been commanded by Captain Sherard Osborn, C.B., and Captain William M. Dowell, C.B. with Commanders Alfred Markham, and Harry H. Rawson. Displacement Tonnage 5200 Speed (measured mile) 15.5 knots. Carries a complement of 550 m?n, and cost for Hull and Engines £193,000. This Ship w?s designed by the Department of the Controller of the Navy, and her Engines were built by Messrs. Humphrys. Commissioned 3rd December, 1873, by Captain George Tryon, C.B., with Arthur K. Wilson as Commander, and William H. Jocelyn, First-Lieutenant ; succeeded i ith May, 1877, by Captain Charles Trelawny Jago, with Day H. Bosanquet Commander, and Anthony Kingscote First Lieutenant. She did duty with the squadron under Admiral G. Phipps Hornby during the Russo-Turkish War, afterwards taking new crew to H.M.S."Wolverene" on Australian station. £55

HMS Alexandra is an Iron Armour-clad (Twin Screw) Steam Ship of 8615 Indicated Horse-power, and carries 12 guns, viz. two 11-inch 25-ton Muzzle Loading guns, and ten 10-inch 18-ton Muzzle Loading guns. Her thickness of armour plating above water in the central parts of the ship varies between 12 inches and 6 inches. Length 325 Ft. 0 In. Breadth 63Ft 8 In Load draught of Water forward 26 Ft 0 In Load draught of Water aft 26 Ft 6 In. Displacemcnt Tonnage 9492 . Speed (measured mile) 15 knots. Carries a complement of 666 men, and cost for Hull and Engines £516,000. She was designed by the Department of the Controller of the Navy, and Engined by Messrs. Humphrys. She was first commissioned on 22nd November, 1876, by Captain Robert O. B. Fitzroy, with Atwell B. Lake as Commander and James L. Hammet First-Lieutenant, and on 15th January, 1877, she hoisted the flag of Vice-Admiral G. T. Phipps Hornby, who afterwards received the honour of Knighthood with the order of K.C.B., for his services as Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean during the critical period of the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-79. On 5th February, 1880, she hoisted the flag of Vice-Admiral Sir F. Beauchamp Seymour, K.C.B., (succeeding Admiral Hornby as Commander-in-Chief in the ll Mediterranean) with Lord Walter T. Kerr as Captain, Sacheverel C. Darwin Commander and John E. Blaxland First-Lieutenant. £55

feet by the same Firm at their works in 1875, at which date the Engines were coumpounded. She is a (Single Screw) Troop Ship, built of iron, unsheathed. She has Engines of 2600 Indicated Horse-power, built by Messrs. Watt. Length 350 ft 0 ins.
Breadth 44 ft 8 ins. Load Draught of Water forward 23 ft 5 ins. Load Draught of Water aft 23 ft 7 ins. Displacement Tonnage 5900 Speed (measured mile) 13 knots. Carries a complement of 214 men, and cost for Hull and Engines Z1 i 1,000.
She was designed by the Department of the Controller of the Navy. First commissioned April 20th, 1863, by Captian Henry W. Hire, and successively by Captain Henry Phelps, John L. Perry, Captain Edward H. Seymour, and Captain R. G. Kinahan. £55

Department of the Controller of the Navy, Admiral Sir Baldwin Walker, K.C.B. Chief Constructor of the Navy-Mr. J Watts, C.B. Launched April 24, 1861. She is an Iron Screw Steam Ship armour plated ; of 600 horse-power, carrying 16 guns, viz : on upper deck four 6.5 tons 7-inch ; on main deck, two 9 tons 8-inch and ten 6.5 tons 7-inch guns. Ft. Ins. Length 280 Ft 0 In. Breadth 54 ft 2 in Draught of Water forward 24 ft 4 ins Draught of Water aft 26ft 1 in Tonnage 3720. Speed 11.62 knots. Engines by Messrs. J. Penn and Son. Carries a complement of 460 men, and cost, with Engines, & c., £232,236. H.M.S. " Defence" was first commissioned by Captain Richard A. Powell, C.B., the 4th of December, 1861, who was succeeded by Captain Augustus Phillimore, 1st October, 1862 ; was re-commissioned by Captain Charles H. May, 20th January, 1868 ; he was succeeded by Captain Nowell Salmon, V.C., 25th March, 1869, and paid off in 1872. Has been used temporarily for Coast-guard Service in the River Shannon. £55

HMS Royal Alfred by W Fred Mitchell. Original chromolithograph published c.1890. Size 9 inches x 6.5 inches (24cm x 19cm).Was commenced as a 91-gun Two-decked Line-of-battle Ship in Portsmouth Dockyard, and afterwards converted into an iron-clad. Launched in October, 1864. Is a wooden Armour-clad Screw Steam Ship of 800 Horse-power, and carries 18 broadside guns, viz: 10 9-in. 12.5 ton rifled, and 8 7-in. 6.5-ton guns. Her thickness of plating varies from 4.5 to 6 inches. Length 273 ft 0 ins Breadth 58 ft 7 ins Draught of Water forward 23 ft 8 ins Draught of Water aft 27 ft 0 ins Tonnage 4068. Speed 12.36 knots. Carries a complement of 600 men, and cost £266,662. On the nth of January, 1867, she was ordered to be commissioned as Flag Ship for Vice-Admiral Sir Rodney Mundy, and Captain F. A. Herbert was appointed to her; Captain The Hon. W. C. Carpenter was appointed 27th September, 1867. On the 3oth of June, 1869, Vice Admiral G. G. Wellesley, hoisted his flag in h?r, and Captain R. Wells was appointed 1st September, 1869. On the 15th September, 1870, Vice-Admiral E. E. Fanshawe hoisted his flag, and Captain H. F. Nicholson was appointed flag Captain. Was paid out of commission January 15th, 1874.

and was bought by the Government in 1854. She Is a (Single Screw) Troop Ship built of iron, unsheathed. She has Engines of 2600 Indicated Horse-power, built at Keyham Factory. Length 340 ft 5 ins.
Breadth 46 ft 2 ins. Load draught of Water forward 20 ft 4 ins. Load draught of Water aft 22 ft 5 ins. Displacement Tonnage 4690 Speed (measured mile) 13.9 knots. Carries a complement of 223 men, and cost for Hull and Engines 130,000.
Was employed during 1854 in conveying troops to the scene of the Russian war, and was commissioned 5th January, 1855, for particular service by Captain Benjamin B. Priest, and was afterwards commanded successively by W. H. Haswell, (25th March, 1877), John Seccombe, (21st July, 1858), Edward Lacy, (25th July, 1862) ; and again she was re-commissioned 18th February, 1867, by Captain Shute B. Piers, and almost continuously employed on troop service, has been commanded successively by Captain Edward Madden, Captains W. B. Grant, Edward White, and Harry W. Brent.

Is an Iron Armour-clad (Twin Screw) Steam Ship of 7700 Indicated Horse-power, and carries 8 guns, viz.: four 11-inch 25-ton Muzzle Loading guns and four 10-inch 18-ton Muzzle Loading guns. Two of the 25-ton guns are mounted above the upper deck within armoured towers, within which they revolve, and rise and fall under the operation of hydraulic machinery. By means of this machinery they are also supplied with ammunition and loaded. Her thickness of armour plating above water in the central parts of the ship varies between 11 inches and 8 inches. Length 285 ft 0 ins Breadth 62 ft 0 ins.Load Draught of Water forward 26 ft 8 ins Load Draught of Water aft 27 ft 2 ins. Displacement Tonnage 8540 Speed (measured mile) 14 56 knots. Carries a complement of 530 men, and cost for Hull and Engines £472,000 She was designed by the Department of the Controller of the Navy, nd Engined by Messrs. Humphrys. She was first commissioned on the 8th July, 1877, by Captain M. Culme-Seymour, with Albert B. Jenkings as Commander and John R. E. Pattisson First-Lieutenant, succeeded by Captain the Hon. W. C. Carpenter, (5th March 1880), with Mr. A. B. Jenkings again as Commander and Duke A. Crofton First-Lieutenant. £55

Her thickness of armour plating above water in the central parts of the ship varies between 9 inches and 7 inches. Length 260 ft 0 ins. Breadth 54 ft 0 ins Load Draught of Waterforward 20 ft 10 ins Load Draught of Water aft 23 ft 4 ins. Displacement Tonnage 5439 Speed (measured mile) 12.348 knots. Carries a complement of 430 men, and cost for Hull and Engines £287,000, She was designed by the Department of the Controller of the Navy, and Engined by Messrs. Laird. She was first commissioned on 17th July, 1877, by Captain William B. Grant, with Alexander G. McKechnie as Commander, and Edward A. Holbech First-Lieutenant, for service with the Channel Squadron, then acting with Admiral Sir G. Phipps Hornby in the Mediterranean, but was soon afterwards ordered to China, and from thence to the Pacific. On 22nd July, 1879, Captain John D'Arcy vas appointed Captain, with the same Commander and First-Lieutenant. £55
